Fat Margaret

Fat Margaret is a tower in Tallinn, nowadays home to Estonian Maritime Museum. The tower was built in the early 16th century during the reconstruction of the medieval city gate system.  Apart from being a fortification against potential invaders to the port of the town, it was also built to impress outside visitors arriving by sea. The tower is a defensive structure at the end of Pikk tänav (Long Street). Together with Suur Rannavärav (the Great Coastal Gate), a sixteenth-century arch flanked by two towers, it served to defend Tallinn's harbor.

Tallinn

Tallinn is one of Northern Europe's best-preserved medieval cities and was added to UNESCO's list back in 1997. As part of the influential Hanseatic League, Tallinn was home to wealthy merchants who left their mark on the city's architecture. The city's iconic skyline is dotted with church spires and red-roofed towers.

Toompea Castle

Toompea castle  is a medieval castle on Toompea hill in the central part of Tallinn. It was erected on the foundations of the crumbling eastern wing of the fortress built on this site in the 13th and 14th centuries. The castle with its late Baroque façade was built between 1767 and 1773. The castle complex is of great significance as it houses the Estonian Parliament Building.

Tallinn

The Historic Centre (Old Town) of Tallinn is an exceptionally complete and well-preserved medieval northern European trading city on the coast of the Baltic Sea. The city developed as a significant centre of the Hanseatic League during the major period of activity of this great trading organization in the 13th-16th centuries. The combination of the upper town on the high limestone hill and the lower town at its foot with many church spires forms an expressive skyline that is visible from a great distance both from land and sea.

Tallinn

A view from the Toompea on Tallinn's old town. Toompea is a limestone hill in the central part of the city of Tallinn. The hill is an oblong tableland, which measures about 400 by 250 metres, has an area of 7 hectares and is about 20–30 metres higher than the surrounding areas.  here are several viewing platforms in Toompea, which offer good views of the surrounding city and are popular among tourists visiting Tallinn.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

This spectacular, onion-domed structure perched atop Toompea Hill is Estonia's main Russian Orthodox cathedral. It's also by far the grandest, most opulent Orthodox church in Tallinn.  Built in 1900, when Estonia was part of the tsarist Russian empire, the cathedral was originally intended as a symbol of the empire's dominance both religious and political. The church's towers' hold Tallinn's most powerful church bell ensemble, consisting of 11 bells, including the largest in Tallinn, weighing 15 tonnes. You can hear the entire ensemble playing before each service.

Tallinn - Town Hall Square

A beautiful Christmas Market in Tallinn Town Hall Square. The modern Christmas market was founded in 1997 and it is open from the last week of November to the first week of January the following year. At the heart of trading is the most important Christmas tree in Estonia, surrounded by Christmas cabins/stands that sells handcrafts, hot wine and souvenirs to about 200,000 visitors every year.

From Tallinn

My 2nd card from Tallinn, capital of Estonia! I just love those medieval towers.
The card shows the Church of the Holy Spirit (Puhavaimu Kirik). It holds a special place in Estonian cultural history as it was the first congregation that started holding services in the Estonian language. The church building dates back to the beginning of 13th century, and served as an almshouse church as well as chapel for the city magistrate.

The card also shows the Parliament building in Toompea Castle,medieval towers of Tallinn & Tallinn by night.

From Tallinn

My first card from Estonia.
The card shows some of the medieval towers of Tallinn, the capital. It's an important port and one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe. It is a city of grey towers topped with red tiles, of stone stairs beneath arching gateways, of narrow winding streets, cobbled pavement and towering ramparts. Tallinn's Old Town is in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1997.
