One of North America's oldest lakes, this inland sea is ringed by curious formations of calcium carbonate called tufa. They are formed underwater by the interaction of calcium from freshwater springs with carbonates in the lake. The tufa become exosed as the lake level fluctuates.
Mono Lake is a saline soda lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in an endorheic basin. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake and make its water alkaline.
