Descent of the Ganges

The Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, in Tamil Nadu, about 58 km from Chennai, were built by the Pallava kings in the 7th and 8th centuries. The town is said to have gained prominence under te rule of Mamalla. These monuments are carved out of rock along the Bay of Bengal coast. Descent of the Ganges is a giant open air bas-relief carved on two monolithic rock boulders. The legend depiced in the bas-relief is the story of the descent of the sacred river Ganges to earth.
