The striking lighthouse at the entrance to Howth harbour looks more like a fortress than a typical light signal. When the lighthouse was built in 1817, it was indeed intended for defensive purposes and its shape is strongly reminiscent of the Martello Towers, which were built on the Irish coast during the Napoleonic Wars. Behind the lighthouse lies a fishing port and a large marina, which are always very busy. Near the quay wall at the entrance to the harbour, a stonemason immortalised the footprints of King George IV, who landed here on 12 August 1821. The then King of Great Britain and Ireland was obviously equipped with very small, delicate feet. There are often seals in the harbour basin, hoping for waste from fishing boats.
