The 3181 m high Sassolungo is the landmark of Val Gardena and one of the most famous mountain peaks in South Tyrol. The Sasso Piatto, its neighbour, is the most western mountain of the Sassolungo Group and reaches the extraordinary height of 2963 m. Around 230 million years ago, the Sassolungo Group was formed from a tropical coral reef. With the construction of the popular standing gondola lift leading from the Sella Pass to the Sassolungo Pass, the area was opened up to tourism. Numerous huts, hiking trails, climbing tours and unique views make the area around the Sassolungo Group a popular excursion and travel destination.
