Montauk Point Lighthouse


The Montauk Point Lighthouse is owned and maintained by the Montauk Historical Society. The lighthouse was authorized by the Second Congress in 1792 under President George Washington. Construction began on June 7th, 1796 and was completed on November 5th, 1796. In 2012 the Montauk Point Lighthouse was designated a National Historic Landmark.

Montauk Point Lighthouse is located on Turtle Hill adjacent to Montauk Point State Park at the easternmost point of Long Island in Montauk, New York. It provides unforgettable 360° views over the Block Island Sound, the Atlantic Ocean and points west. It is one of the best-known and most-beloved icons of Long Island. It was the first lighthouse to be built in New York, and is the fourth-oldest working lighthouse in the nation. The red-and-white tower of the lighthouse rises to a height of 34 meters and it takes 137 iron steps to its peak for panoramic views of the ocean and the New York State coastline.The museum is located in the 1860 Keepers’ House and is full of intriguing trinkets and vestiges from the lighthouse’s past.
