On St. Isaac's Square

St. Isaac's Cathedral in Saint Petersburg, Russia, is the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral in the city and a masterpiece of Neoclassical architecture. Completed in 1858 after 40 years of construction, it currently functions primarily as a museum, though it still holds religious services on major ecclesiastical occasions. The massive central dome is gilded with over 100kg of gold leaf and dominates the city skyline. The inside is decorated with 14 kinds of marble, malachite, and lapis lazuli. It contains over 600 square meters of mosaics and 103 monumental paintingsn.Visitors can climb 262 steps to reach an observation deck offering 360-degree views of Saint Petersburg.

Pavilion of the Three Graces

The Pavilion of the Three Graces, located in Pavlovsk Park.

Spread across nearly 600 ha, Pavlovsk Park is one of the largest parks in Europe and definitely one of the most-visited ones in St. Petersburg. The park was designed in the best traditions of English gardens and houses a plethora of astonishing pieces of neoclassical architecture. Filled with rivers and ponds, tree-lined avenues, classical statues and hidden temples, it’s a delightful place to get lost in. Highlights include the Rose Pavilion and the Private Garden, with its beautifully arranged flowerbeds and impressive sculpture of the Three Graces.

Peterhof Palace

The Grand Palace at Peterhof was designed to be the centerpiece of Peter the Great's Russian Versaille. The long, narrow palace, which was built in the last decade before baroque made way for neoclassicism, has minimal decoration, and Rastrelli's chief stylistic flourishes are the two white pavilions with gilded cupolas at the end of the wings. Beige and white, the palace is majestic without being overwhelming, and provides a perfect backdrop both to the elegantly formal Upper Garden, and to the spectacular Grand Cascade.

Palace Square

An angel on the Alexander Column, Palace Square, Saint Petersburg.

Palace Square is the central city square of St Petersburg. In the centre of the square stands the Alexander Column, designed by Auguste de Montferrand. The monument was raised after the Russian victory in the war with Napoleon's France. This red granite column, the tallest of its kind in the world, is 47.5 metres high and weighs some 500 tons. The monument is topped with a statue of an angel holding a cross. The face of the angel is said to be modeled on the face of Emperor Alexander I.

Kazan Cathedral

Kazan Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan, is a cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church on the Nevsky Prospekt in Saint Petersburg. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Kazan, one of the most venerated icons in Russia.  Kazan Cathedral, constructed between 1801 and 1811 by the architect Andrei Voronikhin, was built to an enormous scale and boasts an impressive stone colonnade, encircling a small garden and central fountain. The cathedral was inspired by the Basilica of St. Peter's in Rome and was intended to be the country's main Orthodox Church.

Smolny Cathedral

Among the outstanding works of Italian architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli is the ensemble of Novodevichy Convent in Russia, and Smolny Cathedral stands proudly as the centerpiece of the entire complex. Smolny Cathedral in St. Petersburg is a true masterpiece of Russian architecture, a bright, graceful building lavishly decorated with columns, pilasters and numerous decorative elements. Its facades are richly ornamented with gilding, giving the airy building an ornate and elegant look. Its sky-blue exterior and Baroque-style architecture bear resemblance to Nikolsky Cathedral, another St. Petersburg landmark built in the same era. Small churches stand at each of the chapel’s four corners, each one topped with a helmet-shaped dome, a large cupola and a cross.

The University Embankment

University Embankment is a 1.2 km long embankment on the right bank of the Bolshaya Neva, on Vasilievsky Island in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Starting at the Spit of Vasilievsky Island, it spans between Palace Bridge and Blagoveshchensky Bridge. Quay with Sphinxes, a quay in front of the Imperial Academy of Arts, is remarkable for the two ancient sphinxes that were brought from Egypt to Russia at the height of Egyptomania in 1832. The quay was completed in 1834.

The Scarlet Sails

The Scarlet Sails is a celebration in St. Petersburg, Russia, the most massive and famous public event during the White Nights Festival every summer. The Church of Resurrection

The church of the resurrection is also known as the Church of our Savior on the Spilled Blood. It was built as a memorial to Emperor Alexander II, who was assassinated on this spot in 1881. It took over twenty years of construction work to build the romantic nationalism style church. The Church  is a former Russian Orthodox church which currently functions as a secular museum. Palace Square

Summer Garden

Railings of the Summer Gardens,  1771-84. The Summer Garden occupies an island between the Fontanka, Moika, and the Swan Canal in Saint Petersburg and shares its name with the adjacent Summer Palace of Peter the Great. A delicate iron-cast railing, separating the park from the public walk of the Palace Embankment, was installed between 1771 and 1784 to a design by Georg von Veldten. The grille is suspended between 36 granite columns crowned with urns and vases. The poet Anna Akhmatova, among others, considered the grille to be a pinnacle of art-casting and one of the symbols of St Petersburg.
