The Iron Gates

December 20, 2024

The Iron Gates is a gorge on the river Danube. It forms part of the boundary between Serbia and Romania. At this point in the Danube, the river separates the southern Carpathian Mountains from the northwestern foothills of the Balkan Mountains. The Romanian side of the gorge constitutes the Iron Gates Natural Park, whereas the Serbian part constitutes the Đerdap National Park. A wider protected area on the Serbian side was declared the UNESCO global geopark in July 2020. The Iron Gates Gorge is the biggest and longest in Europe, with a total length of 100km. In the western part of the Kladovo municipality, on an area of about 64 hectares lies the Djerdap National Park, the biggest in Serbia, characterized by a rich ecosystem and specific flora and fauna and extremely valuable historical treasures dating from prehistoric times.

Fraga da Água d'Alta Waterfall

May 18, 2023

Fraga da Água d'Alta is the largest waterfall in the Geopark Naturtejo. It is located close to Orvalho in the municipality of Oleiros, on the Água d’Alta Stream, originating in the Muradal Mountain. The 50 meter drop with three falls can be observed up close and from the viewpoint located above the waterfall, at Cabeça Murada. Here, the biodiversity is remarkable, among it the remnants of the Laurissilva forest that covered southwest Europe before the glaciations, and which currently only persists in rare places, such as the laurustinus and one of largest Portuguese laurel populations left in the world.
