Colourful night lights show off the beauty of Lower Town and the majesty of the Château Frontenac.

The impressive Château Frontenac is Québec City's most famous landmark. The luxurious hotel perched atop Cape Diamond since the late 19th century was designed to convey prestige in keeping with its Old Québec surroundings. Historic events have taken place in the building, and famous people have stayed there. Opened in 1893, the Châteauesque-styled building has 18 floors. It is one of the first completed grand railway hotels, and was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1981.

Colourful night lights show off the beauty of Lower Town and the majesty of the Château Frontenac in Upper Town.

The Château Frontenac is one of Canada's grand railway hotels built by the Canadian Pacific Railway. The Châteauesque architectural style used throughout the hotel would later serve as a template for other Canadian grand railway hotels erected in the late-19th to early-20th century.  The central fortress-like tower design is derived from medieval and chateaux found throughout France's Loire Valley.

If going down the aptly - named Breakneck Stairs seems scary climbing the stairs back to Upper Town is even more daunting and in the winter, they are often more treacherous.

The Breakneck Stairs, is Quebec City's oldest stairway, built in 1635. They were given their current name in the mid-19th century, because of their steepness. The 59 steps of the Breakneck Stairs connecting côte de la Montagne to rue du Petit-Champlain are just one of the ways to move between Upper and Lower Town.

The historic heart of Quebec City has been on UNESCO’s prestigious world heritage list since 1985, as it is the vibrant cradle of French America and is still surrounded by its fortifications. It is the only North American city to have preserved its ramparts, together with the numerous bastions, gates and defensive works which still surround Old Québec. The Upper Town, built on the cliff, has remained the religious and administrative centre, with its churches, convents and other monuments like the Dauphine Redoubt, the Citadel and Château Frontenac. Together with the Lower Town and its ancient districts, it forms an urban ensemble which is one of the best examples of a fortified colonial city.
